Milton Bulkley was born on July 14, 1840, in Southport, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale in 1861. Due to declining health after graduation, he was advised to take a sea voyage. In late 1862 he travelled by sea from New York to San Francisco. California suited him, and he remained there as a member of the firm, Sherwood, Bulkley & Company, shipping and commission merchants.
